NYC’s Halloween Obsession Turns Five: Inside The Drunken Laboratory’s Haunted Lab

NYC’s Halloween Obsession Turns Five: Inside The Drunken Laboratory’s Haunted Lab
  • PublishedOctober 16, 2026

Cautney Tatiana Nelson, CEO of The Drunken Laboratory, hosts a yearly Halloween event that’s not simply a seasonal attraction. The Haunted Lab is a cyclical part of the New York experience that gives people a meaningful experience, a reason to return, and enough new material to make their return worthwhile.

A Tradition Needs Its Own Identity

The Drunken Laboratory holds its current experience of usually 1.5 hours, full of hands-on experiments, themed drinks and games, karaoke, and a live DJ. It also includes lab coats, goggles, gloves, a themed cocktail, and a specialty shot.

Around Halloween, this event thickens. Previous Haunted Lab editions used haunted décor, scare actors, supernatural storylines, themed menus, experiments, and competitive games.

In 2023, their edition had the  “Séance of Spirits” concept, which made the laboratory turn into a fictional setting.

Cautney Tatiana Nelson Builds Around Participation

At The Haunted Lab, the guests do not stand as mere onlookers. They dress up in the lab uniforms, conduct experiments, compete with each other, answer trivia, sing songs, and engage with the surrounding individuals. Thereby, all the scientific experiments turn into activities as opposed to stage plays. The guests are described as the people creating reactions, while the bartenders prepare the cocktails.

This idea of participation runs throughout the overall idea of Science & Sip. Science & Sip turns science from something people watch into something they can take part in, with hands-on experiments, games, and activities. When people have a role in what is happening, the experience becomes something they actively remember rather than simply something they attended.

The Trick Is Controlled Change

There is a risk in the yearly planning process. Familiarity can increase predictability. The Drunken Laboratory has dealt with this conflict before, which is why the lab includes fresh experiments in its Haunted Lab planning. Experiments, tasks, beverages, characters, decoration, music, and the plot vary every year. Repetition brings recognition, while managed variety produces anticipation.

The strongest annual experiences also give people something to anticipate before they arrive. Once an event has a history, its next edition becomes part of the conversation: What will change? What will return? Who will come with you this time? That anticipation has value because the audience starts participating in the event before opening night.

Halloween Works Because the Audience Knows the Rules

The best seasonal programs never try to impose something completely new on their visitors. They build upon something that is there already. The Drunken Laboratory already has all the visual aspects of a lab setting. Coats, goggles, beakers, test tubes, reactions, instructors, games. So Halloween can play these up.

This is where The Haunted Lab has the advantage. The world is immediately comprehensible to the audience, which allows for mystery, entertainment, excitement, and awe. Previously, the event offered a scary take on the laboratory experience complete with ghost drinks, décor, scare actors, experiments, and competitions. Good seasonal programming amplified the venue.

Cautney Tatiana Nelson’s Bigger Lesson: Put People Inside the Story

The Haunted Lab stems from a bigger idea. Cautney Tatiana Nelson began with science education and later created an adult experience that puts people inside the subject rather than keeping them outside it. The Drunken Laboratory evolved from an after-school STEM program to an immersive adult entertainment idea.

This is also one of the reasons why the event doesn’t depend solely on the decorations. The room may be decorated to resemble a haunted house, but the audience has a job to do. The theme creates the attraction. The role provides an incentive to take part. The task creates conversation starters for strangers.

Every edition also leaves behind memories, photographs, social media posts, inside jokes, and even expectations for the following year. The events have created their own history.

From Halloween Event to Annual Property

Cautney Tatiana Nelson’s five Haunted Lab experience points towards a much larger opportunity in experiential entertainment. Build such traditions that people can recognize them by name alone.

The Haunted Lab can return every year without becoming the same event every year, because there is enough room for different experiments, stories, games, beverages, music, and visual themes in the laboratory setting.

That is what is required from the annual program: maintain the reason why people came at all and make some changes in the event to make the return interesting.

In the case of The Drunken Laboratory, Halloween is not just another day on the calendar; it is a repeated chapter in the narrative of the brand. Cautney Tatiana Nelson’s concept is not focused on making one Halloween night more exciting. It is about creating a tradition recognizable to the audience, which will become part of their own traditions in New York.
