Hali Borenstein is not the normal fashion CEO. While many business executives are focused on beauty, trends, and riches, Hali adds something more substantial to the table: a sense of duty. As CEO of Reformation, she has expertly combined her passion for fashion with a dedication to sustainability, inclusion, and ethical business practices. Her tale is about more than just climbing the corporate ladder; it’s about having a meaningful influence on how fashion runs today.

Early Life and Education: Sparks of Curiosity

Hali Borenstein was born and raised in Miami Beach, Florida, and has always been captivated with fashion. As a teenager, she spent hours at local malls, not just shopping but also observing—how different companies presented themselves, how people reacted to designs, and how clothes might define a person’s confidence. While her friends were just concerned in donning the current trends, Hali was already analysing what made them famous.

Her interest led her to Duke University, where she earned a degree that combined analytical talents with creativity. Following Duke, she advanced her education by getting an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business, which impacted her approach to leadership, strategy, and problem-solving.At Stanford, she met instructors and friends who urged her to look beyond business margins and prioritise long-term effect.

Stepping into the Professional World: Finding Her Path

Hali, like many ambitious grads, began his career in consulting. She joined Bain & Company, a well-known consulting business, where she honed her analytical abilities and strategic thinking talents. However, there was something lacking. While she thrived in the fast-paced consulting environment, her heart wasn’t quite in it. She aspired to work in an environment where she could combine her business skills with her passion for fashion.

She was given the chance when she started working as a senior merchandiser for Gymboree Group, Inc. This is when she first experienced the hard reality of the fashion industry: ethical quandaries in production, supply chain inefficiencies, and sustainability issues. She began to question the rationale of making a T-shirt for $2 and wondered about the people behind these things. These observations laid the groundwork for the ideals that would eventually define her leadership at Reformation.

Joining Reformation: Where Passion Meets Purpose

Hali’s career changed dramatically in 2014. Yael Aflalo, Reformation’s founder, contacted her on LinkedIn, fascinated by her background and approach. The firm, which is recognised for its environmentally friendly approach to fashion, was an excellent fit for Hali. She joined as Director of Merchandising, allowing her to combine her professional experience with her personal ideals.

Over the following three years, she worked relentlessly to develop Reformation’s product strategy. She guided the brand through huge growth in design, merchandising, and e-commerce before becoming President. Her efforts were not overlooked. When the time came for a new leader, she was the obvious option. In June 2020, Hali Borenstein took over as CEO.

Leading Through Challenges: A CEO on a Mission

Taking over as CEO in 2020 was not a simple assignment. The globe was in chaos as a result of the epidemic, and Reformation was dealing with internal issues like as inclusion and workplace culture. Instead of avoiding these challenges, Hali addressed them full on.

She led a company-wide examination of Reformation’s principles, emphasising not just sustainability but also diversity and inclusiveness. She organised expert-led inclusiveness seminars, collaborated with organisations such as the Black in Fashion Council, and actively sought to diversity Reformation’s marketing images. Her mission was clear: to ensure that Reformation was not only a leader in sustainable design, but also a brand that authentically represented and supported all communities.

Under her leadership, Reformation expanded to over 40 retail locations and hired 1,000 people. But growth was more than simply statistics. Hali pioneered new product categories like as shoes, bags, and athleisure, elevating Reformation from a boutique brand to a household name among sustainable fashion enthusiasts.

Balancing Leadership and Motherhood

In addition to her professional successes, Hali is a dedicated mother to two girls. Balancing the demands of being a CEO and a mom is no easy task, yet she does both positions with elegance. She frequently discusses how her girls are already exhibiting an interest in fashion—her elder daughter even drafts patterns, which Hali happily shares with her staff. For her, sustainability is more than simply a business endeavour; it is about leaving a better planet for her children and future generations.

Juggling the responsibilities of a prominent leadership position with family life needs discipline, support, and a clear sense of priorities. Hali attributes her ability to manage to a combination of systematic preparation and understanding when to rely on her team, both at work and home. She also emphasises the necessity of self-care, recognising that in order to lead effectively, she must first take care of her own health.

Vision for the Future

Hali’s efforts at Reformation are far from ended. Under her leadership, the firm has established ambitious environmental targets, such as becoming climate-positive by 2025 and totally circular by 2030. She is motivated to move the industry ahead by demonstrating that fashion can be both fashionable and responsible.

Beyond commercial success, she envisions a future in which the fashion industry as a whole accepts sustainability as the norm rather than the exception. She fights for regulatory reforms that promote ethical production and environmental conservation, as well as actively participating in industry conversations about the future of sustainable fashion.
