Leadership, Risk, and High-Stakes Decisions

Some careers follow a plan. Others begin with a single sentence.

More than two decades ago, H.E. Dr. Maitha bint Salem Al Shamsi, UAE Minister of State, said to Dr. Birgit Maria Kemphues: “We need women like you here in the UAE.”  Those words marked the beginning of a new chapter—one that has shaped her professional work ever since.

She did not choose the title Boardroom Emergency Doctor. It was given to her by clients in the Gulf, reflecting the role she came to play in situations where major decisions carried significant consequences.

Her field is Independent Sign-Off Diagnostics. Rather than telling leaders what to decide, she identifies what must be understood before a decision is made: hidden risks, untested assumptions, unclear responsibilities, and commitments that may be difficult to reverse once approved.

Her work takes place at one of the most critical moments in business—the point immediately before a decision becomes irreversible.

The United Arab Emirates is more than her home. It is the country that recognized her work early, encouraged independent thinking, and provided the environment in which her ideas could develop internationally.

Today, Dr. Birgit Maria Kemphues shares these ideas through SIGN-OFF OR NO DEAL, an international series of books, podcasts, and executive briefings focusing on leadership, governance, and high-stakes decision-making.

“If the risk is already embedded in the decision, it should be named before the decision moves,” says Dr. Maria.

With more than three decades of international business experience across Europe, the Gulf, Asia, and Africa, she developed the KEMPHUES Boardroom Emergency Operating System—a framework combining pattern recognition, evidence-based analysis, responsibility mapping, and decision dynamics to support organizations facing complex strategic choices.

Among other recognitions, Dr. Birgit Maria Kemphues received the Elite Leadership Award in March 2026.

Today, she works with boards, business owners, family offices, and executive leaders whenever important decisions require independent diagnosis before commitment—because decisions deserve clarity before consequences.
